This course prepares participants for the practical responsibilities of an AS9100 Quality Management System Representative and for conducting internal audits based on AS9100 and ISO 19011:2018. We combine standard requirements, organisational practice and audit techniques so that participants can interpret aerospace requirements and translate them into decisions, process oversight and effective action.
Why do organisations
need stronger aerospace quality competencies?
Knowing the standard is easier than applying it
In many organisations, access to AS9100 requirements is not the problem. The challenge is translating them into clear responsibilities, effective process oversight and day-to-day accountability for quality in a demanding aerospace environment.
Responsibility for the QMS can become formal rather than effective
Organisations appoint someone to coordinate the quality management system, but without appropriate preparation that person may struggle to align activities, support management and maintain the system's effectiveness and development in an aerospace context.
Internal audits do not deliver their full value
An audit should not be reduced to ticking off requirements. Without sound audit techniques, an understanding of ISO 19011 and the ability to evaluate system effectiveness, the organisation loses an important tool for control and continual improvement.
Difficult audit situations require judgement, not improvisation
Interviewing auditees, responding to resistance, asking effective questions and documenting findings require more than knowledge of the standard. They also demand communication skills and practical preparation.
Audit competency is not developed systematically
Without a clear understanding of audit roles, competency levels, auditor evaluation and team development, it is difficult to establish an audit programme that genuinely supports quality across the aerospace supply chain.
Weak quality competencies create costs that are not immediately visible
Misinterpreted requirements, ineffective audits, unclear accountability and superficial QMS oversight weaken organisational performance and increase operational, quality and reputational risk.
